Cross-pollinated zinnia seeds are the result of pollen being transferred between two different zinnia flowers, typically facilitated by insects like bees and butterflies. Because zinnias are highly attractive to pollinators, they cross-pollinate easily if multiple varieties are grown in close proximity—often requiring a distance of up to half a mile for complete isolation. This process blends the genetic material of the two parent plants, often leading to "fun surprises" in the next generation, such as unexpected color variations, unique petal shapes, or ombre patterns that differ from the original "mother" plant. While this genetic diversity enhances plant vigor and resilience, it means the resulting seeds will not grow "true-to-type"; for example, seeds saved from a red zinnia may bloom as pink or orange if it was cross-pollinated with a neighbor.
