Formby Monarch was bred by renowned Australian dahlia breeder George Harding of Devonport, Tasmania. Introduced in the early 1980s, it is part of Harding's well-known "Formby" line of dahlias. Harding developed more than 100 named Formby varieties during his breeding career.

Formby Monarch was developed with exhibition qualities in mind and has earned recognition on the show bench. Its combination of exceptionally large blooms, dusty pink coloring, and distinctive golden-tipped petals has helped it remain a sought-after variety decades after its introduction.
