A Bit of History
River's Penelope is a River's WB Dahlias introduction, hybridized by Erin Kenyon of River's Dahlias in Veneta, Oregon. It was introduced in 2023 and has become a sought-after variety among dahlia growers. The American Dahlia Society lists River's Penelope as M-ID-PR, confirming its medium size classification, informal decorative form, and purple color.
Growers love Penelope for her impressive flower production. Although the individual blooms are petite, the plants make up for it with sheer numbers, long strong stems, secure stem attachments, and healthy growth. Her wavy, almost wiggly petals give each bloom a sweet, complete, globe-like appearance that is particularly beautiful in bouquets.
Ideal For
- Cutting gardens
- Everyday bouquets and market bouquets
- Wedding and event floral design
- Cottage gardens and flower borders
Pairs Well With
River's Penelope is gorgeous paired with River's Rosie for a layered purple-toned display, River's Tangy Tart for a vibrant purple-and-orange combination, or soft blush and white dahlias for a romantic bouquet palette.
If you're looking for a variety that produces lots of small, bouquet-friendly blooms on strong stems, River's Penelope is a true standout. Her petite flowers may be small, but her presence in the garden and cutting vase is anything but.
